Montao Brings Post-Apocalyptic Vision to “2223” With Masta Killa and an Akira Tribute

Montao is putting a fresh spotlight on “2223,” a standout track from the deluxe edition of his studio album Echoes of the Cosmos. Featuring a guest verse from Wu-Tang Clan’s Masta Killa, the song brings together cinematic production, dystopian imagery, and a hybrid sound that moves between hip-hop, EDM, and more experimental territory.

According to Montao, “2223” was the one track from the project that still called for extra attention. That instinct makes sense. The song is built around a vivid post-apocalyptic atmosphere, with production that feels expansive and visual from the start. Its sense of scale, combined with the album’s broader anime influence, led Montao to connect the track with Akira, the cult classic film that helped shape the release’s visual and conceptual direction.

Rather than staying within one lane, “2223” blends genres in a way that reflects Montao’s unconventional approach. The production moves with a cinematic, experimental edge, gradually building tension before giving way to Masta Killa’s verse. That contrast between Montao’s UK-influenced sound palette and Masta Killa’s unmistakable delivery gives the track much of its impact, balancing atmosphere with lyrical weight.

Montao said the song was not originally intended to include vocals but evolved as the creative process unfolded.

“This track was set out to be instrumental, but as the journey continues and develops so does the music….I’ve always been a massive fan of Masta Killa, to me the most interesting member of Wu Tang Clan without a doubt. His vocals and signature style combined with the overall vision of '2223' has made it simply epic. Now, taking it one step further and being able to also create the soundtrack to one of my all time favourite movies "Akira", has felt like a final piece of the puzzle. Enjoy!”

That progression from instrumental concept to fully realized collaboration gives “2223” a sense of momentum that fits its theme. The track feels designed to transport listeners into a damaged future world, but it also carries the energy of artistic experimentation, where ideas expand rather than stay fixed.

With Echoes of the Cosmos already out, “2223” now stands as one of the clearest examples of Montao’s ambition as a producer, pulling from hip-hop tradition, electronic textures, and visual storytelling to create something immersive and distinct.
